We live in a distracted world. Every moment we are subjected to emails, notifications for work apps, notifications from social media apps, reminders, everything screaming for attention right now – this moment.
This affects our inner world as well, our feelings, sensations, emotions and thoughts. Today when we meditate, let us observe these inner aspects – these inner notifications and observe them.
When we focus on our breath today when you catch your mind – just observe what was it that caught your mind? Was it a sensation like an itch or discomfort? Was it a feeling like a mood change or sleepiness? Or was it an emotion like anger or excitement. Or a thought about the past or future?
So when you realise your mind has wandered if that was a thought – just say in your mind to yourself – oh a thought! And bring your mind back to your breath. Similarly if it was a pain – oh a sensation. And so on.
This is a good technique to bring your mind back to the object of focus – in this case – the breath – and recognising what took your mind away.
