We harbour a lot of negative thoughts in our mind. When we dress up for an event – we constantly criticise ourselves for the way we dress. We criticise ourselves for our physical features like a bad nose or hair. So in a way it looks like we are totally unsatisfied creatures always complaining about ourselves to us.
Just imagine if we kept telling what we tell ourselves to others – how cruel we might be seem!So for today we’ll just observe thoughts that are negative and critical of ourselves. When a negative thought come – just pause – listen completely to the thought – then decide whether it is worth acting on it. Then let it go.
For example – when you sit to work – a thought might say – it’s no use now – you’ll never be able to finish all that work today! Even during this lockdown – you might think – I should have started working out or dieting and whatever it is you want to do earlier.
What will you do? Listen to it. Recognise that it is a critical thought. Then deliberately say to yourself – I don’t need to act on this thought. I don’t need to feel bad about it. And let the negative thought go. You might want to read Rumination and mindfulness which is related to this topic.
