Being rooted to the ground means not getting carried away by your thoughts, emotions or sensations. It also has another meaning. It means staying on one’s feet and observing all the sensations without reacting to them – whether it is pain, discomfort, tingling sensation, ache, heat, cold or a throb.

When you do a standing or a walking meditation, you focus on your feet or your legs instead of the breath. How many times have you been standing talking to a friend or waiting for a train or bus or a queue? You don’t notice the discomfort of standing in one place, because your body shifts and moves without even you being aware of it.

Secondly, when we experience pain – we become miserable due to the anxious thoughts that come with it. We hardly ever observe the pain. When we experience pain or discomfort – it is a good idea to sit with it – observe it – make slight movements and see how those movements help in changing or shifting or reducing the pain.

Becoming more aware of your pain and observing it may not reduce the pain, but helps you in dealing with it better. Today, take a comfortable stance as you stand to do today’s meditation. Click on the link below to do the meditation exercise.
