Fear of the unknown is something which we all have. It is one of the uppermost emotion we have. In recent times fear has only increased causing anxiety, stress and a whole lot of mental ailments.
Let us explore a little bit of our fear today. Fear was a very useful emotion during our animal ancestor days. That was because we had to survive in the forest among other predators. Fear made us alert and notice any danger lurking nearby and respond accordingly. But now there no need to fear that we would be killed by a lion or a snake in a next corner.
But we have the ability to think- unlike other animals. And thoughts magnify the emotion and cause us to go into a spiral of thoughts about the unpleasant things that might happen and cause us distress.
So sometimes our fear or anxiety or even excitement may not be good for us. For eg. Fear about the virus spread making us panic and take drastic steps may not be good for us. Worrying about what will happen in the end, how will it end, will I be safe and such thoughts will only create more anxiety. Instead understanding the situation and acting with our rational mind is required today.
When you notice that you are anxious, instead of brushing it away and distracting yourself with other activities, it may be a good idea to explore what is it that you fear and what is making you anxious. Notice what happens to your body when you are afraid or anxious. Where do you feel fear in your body. When you do this you become present with the emotion and accept it. That way anxiety also loosens its grip on you.
