Mindfulness and the sly mind

The subconscious mind is always watching you twenty four-seven and communicating with you. Either through sensations, emotions or thoughts. You won’t even notice it if you are unaware. All the while, it will make you believe that You – Devi – the rational person is the one who is making all the decisions and taking the actions.

Manu is the monkey mind, the high-strung emotional one and Chippy is the subconscious lizard mind whose only concerned that you stay alive can also take the form of the rational mind to convince you to do things. And you won’t even notice it.

Both Chippy and Manu can cajole you into doing things that are comfortable. For instance, you decided to go for a walk. Chippy will first of all, not allow you to get up from bed.  And while you are asleep, Chippy is always awake, watching over you to protect you, and managing all the tasks that happen while you are sleeping.

So let us say, you managed to get up. You had to go to the bathroom so Chippy had to let you go. Now you (Devi) have  woken up and you see your shoes which you had kept the day before. You decide that yes, today since you have already woken up, you should go for the run. But chippy has other plans. Chippy doesn’t understand running for the sake of running. Chippy only understands running away from danger or running towards food or a mate. Other times you just laze around enjoying the well-deserved rest from scavenging for food and staying alive with danger lurking around in the form of snakes or wild mammals.

So Chippy will use every trick in the book to cajole you into sleeping. “It is Sunday today. Monday is a good day to start!” Or it is 28th May. Why don’t you relax today and start on 1st June?” “It is hot outside and a good time to run is actually before sunrise.” Words articulated so well that you (Devi) gets convinced about it and go back to bed.

Only when you sit down with the other two and observe them carefully without getting carried away by them will you be able to understand them and then convince them gently that the danger is in sitting down will the subconscious mind let you off its grip. Well this is easier said than done. Also easy to understand intellectually but to experience it you need to spend more time with your thoughts and emotions.
