Shopping bags and mindfulness

When was the last time you were at a shop without your bag and purchased another bag to your collection to get your stuff? If you are like old me, then not long ago.

There were times I would land up at a shop without a bag and pay for an extra bag. Earlier plastic bags were free. Thank God there are fewer plastic bags in circulation now.

But that has changed after I learnt to be mindful. Practising mindfulness helped me to become more environment-friendly and sustainable. As a researcher on sustainability, I realised that it is not enough to just have good intentions of carrying a reusable bag to the store or carrying your own water bottle. One has to remember to do it while going out. Now that is possible only if you are mindful when you leave the house.

Mindfulness helps you to be aware of this. It helps you to pause and think for a moment when you leave your house about where you are heading. It helps you visualise the places you will pass and the things you need to do on the way back so you save your resources like energy and time. Pausing for a few seconds before you head out or before you do any activity helps you to be more sustainable.

Practising mindfulness by observing your thoughts for a few minutes on a daily basis helps you to be mindful. When we are mindful, we are aware of the things that we do. With awareness comes the right actions like taking a reusable bag or carrying a water bottle from home and such actions that help to save the earth. Mindfulness helps you to convert your good intentions into good actions.
